THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Fufu Kyoto
Check-in at Fufu Kyoto happens at three in the afternoon, but the real arrival comes later, when the window above a hinoki-wood bath is cracked open and the breeze off Higashiyama drifts through the room along with the sound of the Lake Biwa Canal outside. Every one of the forty rooms here has its own cypress tub filled with natural hot spring water, a feature no ordinary city hotel in Kyoto offers, and the property sits three kilometers from downtown in a quiet stretch of Sakyo-ku near Nanzenji Temple, an easy walk from the Kyoto Municipal Zoo and the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art. Ioto, the in-house restaurant, serves charcoal-grilled Kyoto vegetables with a view over the Japanese garden, and a separate garden house holds a bar for a drink before or after dinner. A concierge desk in the lobby is built specifically around Kyoto, arranging introductions to restaurants and outings rather than generic bookings. None of this suits someone chasing nightlife or wanting a fast, central base for shopping; the setting rewards travelers content to sit still for a few days, ideally with someone they do not need to entertain. There is a conference hall, though with forty rooms and no lobby crowds, this is a poor fit for large business groups. An accommodation tax and photo identification are required at check-in, standard practice across the city. What lingers afterward is smaller: the bath amenities are scented with cherry blossom and sandalwood, chosen so the fragrance stays on skin and clothing well past checkout, a quiet echo of the stay rather than a souvenir. Every one of Fufu Kyoto's forty rooms has its own cypress bath filled with natural hot spring water, in a quiet stretch of Sakyo-ku near Nanzenji Temple. It suits travelers happy to slow down for days, not those wanting nightlife or a central base.
