THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Genji Kyoto
On the west bank of the Kamo River, in Gojo-Kawaramachi, a quiet grid of laneways and artist studios a five-minute walk from Kiyomizu-Gojo Station, Genji Kyoto opened in the spring of 2022 as a modern reading of the kyomachiya, the traditional Kyoto townhouse. The building was designed by Geoffrey P. Moussas of Design 1st, an American architect trained at MIT who has lived in Kyoto since 1994, restoring and rebuilding machiya, tearooms, kura storehouses and, at one point, a four-hundred-year-old Buddhist temple; interiors here were done jointly with Jun Tomita, and the gardens, including the glass-enclosed Ukifune Garden that greets guests off the lobby, by the landscape designer Marc Peter Keane. Nineteen rooms are spread across the property, most facing the river, the city, or a private courtyard, with a rooftop garden and bar above them that locals have taken to calling the Sky Forest. The hotel is run day to day by general manager Mao Yamaguchi, alongside operations and F&B manager Isao and guest experience manager Koko, both Kyoto natives. The name and the design both take their cue from the Tale of Genji, the eleventh-century court novel said to have been partly set nearby; the lobby's Ukifune Garden borrows its name from one of the book's late chapters, and the architecture throughout leans on the Heian-period habit of blurring inside and outside instead of separating them. Rooms use solid, warm-toned wood, custom furniture from Kyoto's Futaba Furniture and the studio +veve, washi paper light fixtures made by local artisans, and bathrooms finished in real river stone underfoot, with a timber soaking tub set apart from the shower. Food and drink is overseen by executive chef Murat, who has cooked in Kyoto hotel kitchens for years despite training originally in Turkey; breakfast leans traditionally Japanese, and evening drinks are complimentary in the lounge for guests who prefer not to go looking for them. Staying here feels closer to being a guest in someone's well-kept townhouse than checking into a hotel of any real size; nineteen rooms is small enough that the front desk knows your name by the second morning, and the pace of the place, unhurried, low-lit, arranged around gardens instead of a lobby bar, suits a reader more than a networker. It rewards people who slow down: the Ukifune Garden is worth pausing at, not just photographing on the way past, and the rooftop, while it has the best skyline in the neighbourhood, isn't built for a crowd. You should not come if you want a big hotel's anonymity, or if a five-minute walk to the nearest train feels like an inconvenience instead of a chance to see Gojo-Kawaramachi's laneways at ground level, and this is also not the address for a Kyoto trip built around Gion's geisha districts, which are a taxi ride rather than a walk from here. You should come for a house-sized hotel with a literary conceit actually followed through in stone, wood and garden design instead of left on a plaque in the lobby, for a river view without the scale of the big riverside hotels, and for a staff, several of them Kyoto natives, who treat the place as their own instead of a shift. The short version: A nineteen-room kyomachiya-style hotel on the Kamo River in Gojo-Kawaramachi, opened 2022, designed by Geoffrey P. Moussas with gardens by Marc Peter Keane, built around the Tale of Genji and Heian-era ideas of inside and outside.
