THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hiiragiya Ryokan
At Hiiragiya in Kyoto, the stone path to the entrance is splashed with water before a guest arrives, an old sign of welcome. Shoes come off at the door, corridor slippers replace them, and the pace of the day changes before you reach your room. The inn has stood on this ground since 1818, run by one family the whole time, long enough that both Yasunari Kawabata and Junichiro Tanizaki called it home away from home and wrote about the rain outside its windows. Rooms are built from wood, sand-and-clay walls, paper and straw, in the sukiya-zukuri style of old Kyoto tea houses, and a few keep private ofuro baths carved from Japanese umbrella pine and filled from the inn's own well; one bathroom still holds a stained-glass window of Kinkakuji made by Sanchi Ogawa. Dinner is Kyo-Kaiseki, breakfast is yudofu simmered tofu with grilled fish and rice from a clay pot. There is a sauna, a steam room, free Wi-Fi, and staff who speak more than one language, but staying here follows an old rhythm, not a quick night between meetings. This suits someone who wants to sit on tatami, follow the small courtesies of a Japanese inn, and read history into her surroundings, not anyone after a modern suite with a king bed and room to spread out. Few hotels can claim continuous family ownership since the Edo period, a Nobel laureate's devotion, and status as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property, all at once. Check-in is from 3pm, check-out by 11am, and it rewards arriving unrushed. Hiiragiya has run under one Kyoto family since 1818, its rooms still holding private pine baths and a stained-glass window made over a century ago. Yasunari Kawabata called it home away from home. It suits travellers who want tatami and tradition, not a modern suite with a king bed.
