THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, a Luxury Collection Hotel Spa
Opposite Nijo Castle in Kyoto's Nakagyo ward, on ground the Kitake, the executive branch of the Mitsui family, held as their residence for more than three centuries, Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto opened in November 2020 with the 300-year-old Kajiimiya Gate, the original entrance to that residence, still standing as the way in. The hotel is a joint undertaking of Mitsui Fudosan Group and Marriott's Luxury Collection, 161 rooms and suites built around a design brief split four ways: Akira Kuryu as master design advisor, André Fu on the guest rooms and lobby, Shunsaku Miyagi on the garden, and Yohei Akao on the spa and restaurants. General manager Manabu Kusui runs a property that is, notably, the only luxury hotel in central Kyoto sitting over its own natural hot spring, drawn from thermal water deep under the city. Guest rooms take their proportions from the tea room, translated into walnut and birch, with bathing areas built around tubs cut from stone and, in a handful of suites, private onsen baths fed from the same source as the hotel's public bath. Fu keeps the palette close to the materials on hand, wood, stone, plaster, without layering in pattern. At Toki, chef Tetsuya Asano, the first Japanese sous chef at the Ritz Paris and formerly executive chef at the two-Michelin-starred L'Espadon, builds a French menu around Kyoto's water, using its low mineral content to draw the dashi and stocks that run through the tasting menu; Toki appeared in the 2024 Michelin Kyoto guide, and Asano was subsequently chosen to represent Japan at the 2027 Bocuse d'Or. Forni does an Italian grill and wood-fired pizza for less formal nights, and the Garden Bar pours cocktails looking onto Miyagi's garden and the moat wall of Nijo Castle beyond it. Staying here feels urban, not a retreat: Horikawa-dori's traffic runs a few minutes from the gate, and the hotel works by being inside the city instead of apart from it, using the onsen and the garden as a counterweight rather than an escape. It suits someone who wants Kyoto's history at close range, Nijo Castle's moat wall is visible from several rooms, without giving up a hot bath at the end of the day, or a kitchen doing something more considered than another kaiseki set. Service leans formal, closer in register to an international hotel than a ryokan, and the result is a well-run city property with an onsen built in, not a traditional inn dressed up for foreign guests. You should not come here for the quiet of the Arashiyama hills or the atmosphere of Kyoto's older ryokan; the setting is central and built up, and whatever calm you find is made inside the walls, not outside them. Skip it, too, if hotel formality feels like a burden: front desk and restaurant service run correct, not familiar. You should come for a combination that's hard to find elsewhere in the city center, a private onsen fed by the same spring as the public bath, a chef trained at the Ritz Paris cooking French food with Kyoto's water, and a three-hundred-year-old gate you'll pass through every day you're there. The short version: A 161-room hotel opposite Nijo Castle in central Kyoto, built on three centuries of Mitsui family land behind its original Kajiimiya Gate, with the only natural hot spring in the city center and a Ritz Paris-trained chef running the kitchen at Toki.
