THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Sowaka
Cross the stone threshold at Sowaka and the noise of Gion's lantern-lit lanes falls away into a courtyard still damp from the morning's water-sprinkling, a Kyoto custom kept alive here since the building was a working ryotei restaurant a century ago. The eleven rooms in that original Taisho-era wing keep the carved transoms, individual materials and cypress tubs of Sukiya artisans, no two alike, while twelve rooms in the newer Annex work the same design language into a wide double bed or twin layout with a mini-bar and private bathroom. Ask for one of the rooms with its own private garden or a maisonnette layout in the main building and the century shows in the joinery, not just the marketing. In 2025 Forbes Travel Guide gave Sowaka a four-star rating, the first time it went to a Japanese hotel built around a structure over a hundred years old, and La Liste has since placed it among its 2026 world Top 1,000 hotels. Dinner at Restaurant Gion Loka runs to a seasonal kaiseki course built around ingredients chosen that day, with vegan and allergy adjustments made without fuss. Concierge, massage, a doctor on call and free parking round out a stay that sits a short walk from Yasaka Shrine, Maruyama Park and Kodaiji Temple. Families should note children under twelve cannot stay in the main building, though the Annex accepts them. This suits someone who wants Kyoto's history under her feet rather than framed on a wall, and who is happy with 23 rooms instead of 230. It will frustrate anyone chasing a rooftop bar or a lobby full of people to watch. Sowaka rebuilt a hundred-year-old Kyoto ryotei into 23 rooms, and Forbes gave it the first four-star rating awarded to a Japanese hotel this old. It's an easy walk from Yasaka Shrine, with kaiseki dinners at Gion Loka. Not for anyone wanting a big lobby or elevators.
