THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Ritz Carlton Kyoto
The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto opened in 2014 with just 134 rooms across five floors, close enough to Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae to reach the Kyoto International Manga Museum and the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art on foot. Ask for one of the Japanese-style suites and you get a private terrace facing the garden, or take the Executive King Suite for its river outlook, a traditional layout paired with Ritz-Carlton service that standard doubles don't offer. The wellness area is the real distinguisher: an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, massage rooms, a gym and a yoga space sit under one roof, with a garden and terrace for anyone who'd rather sit outside. Mizuki, the in-house restaurant, keeps to Japanese cuisine, while a bar, cafe and room service cover the rest of the day; full breakfast runs 7:00 to 10:30 and costs around 6,325 yen a person on top of the room rate. Staff work across Chinese, English, French, Italian and Japanese, useful for anyone navigating a 3:00pm check-in without a translator. An extra bed runs 12,000 yen a night, and every guest leaves a 20,000 yen deposit at check-in against damages. This suits a couple or a solo traveler who wants Kyoto's museums within walking distance but wants a garden terrace to return to, not a hallway. It won't suit anyone hunting a discount rate or a sprawling resort footprint; five floors and 134 rooms keep it closer to a large house than a compound. What lingers after checkout is how quiet a building this size manages to stay. The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto pairs terraced Japanese-style suites and a river-view Executive Suite with an indoor pool, sauna and steam room under one roof. Breakfast costs extra and staff work in five languages. It suits travelers who want Kyoto's museums nearby and a garden terrace to return to.

The hotel stands on the banks of the Kamogawa River, a site favored by Japanese nobility since the seventeenth century, with views toward the Higashiyama mountains. Its interior features a three-story waterfall and gardens styled around an art theme inspired by the eleventh-century novel The Tale of Genji, alongside more than 400 pieces of Japanese artwork.
