THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Shinmonzen
Nine suites, each named for the material that defines it — washi paper, urushi lacquer, stone, bamboo, silk — sit along Shinmonzen-dori, the Kyoto street known for centuries as home to the city's antique dealers and art shops. Tadao Ando spent over a decade on the build, and it shows in how quiet the place feels close to Yasaka Shrine and Maruyama Park, a short walk from the Sanjō Keihan crossing. What sets it apart from other Kyoto ryokan-style hotels is the art: Louise Bourgeois, Gerhard Richter, Damien Hirst, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Makoto Ofune hang alongside a Charlotte Perriand desk in the lounge, turning the corridors into something closer to a private collection than hotel decor. Jean-Georges Vongerichten runs the kitchen, working Kyoto's kyoyasai heirloom vegetables and tofu into a menu that changes with the season, backed by a cellar of more than 3,000 bottles and the hotel's own %Arabica coffee blend. Guests who want a full-service resort with dozens of rooms and multiple restaurants will find this too small and too quiet; anyone drawn to nine suites, a Riverside Lounge with complimentary seasonal drinks, and Reiki treatments in-room will find the scale exactly the point. Two of the suites, Jiki and Take, are built fully accessible, with elevators, roll-in bathrooms and wheelchair hire on request, a detail few boutique properties this size bother with. Check-in runs from 3pm, check-out by noon. The connection to Villa La Coste in Provence gives it a sibling in ambition, but Shinmonzen's version of that idea is compressed into nine rooms on one Kyoto street, and that compression is what makes it linger. Nine material-themed suites by Tadao Ando sit on Shinmonzen-dori among Kyoto's antique dealers, with art from Louise Bourgeois to Damien Hirst and a Jean-Georges kitchen downstairs. Two suites are fully wheelchair accessible. It suits travellers who want scale kept small, not those chasing a big-resort roster.

The Shimonzen’s sister stay Villa La Coste is practically a living artwork, with its huge-scale interactive installations and architectural follies, and this ryokan is as much a shrine to culture, in it's creatively thriving neighbourhood.
