THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Matilda
Coffee arrives at the window with a view over San Miguel de Allende's rooftops, and the walk to the historic center from Hotel Matilda takes three blocks, past a colonial facade that gives no hint of the sleek, white Cubist interior inside. What sets this thirty-two-room hotel apart from other boutique addresses in the city is its art: pieces by Bosco Sodi, Aldo Chaparro and Nacho Rodriguez Bach were commissioned specifically for these walls, turning the corridors into something closer to a small gallery than a hotel. Vicente Torres, a Michelin-starred chef, oversees Moxi, the restaurant that looks out over the pool with Mediterranean-leaning plates built from the hotel's own gardens, while Bovine, upstairs, runs a French-bistro menu under Chef Juan Carlos Hernández and opens onto a terrace anchored by a mural from local artist Jesús Valenzuela. The spa keeps a hammam and structures its treatments around five stated points of wellness, with yoga held some Friday mornings in the Zen Garden. This suits a couple planning a quiet, design-focused escape, or a solo traveler drawn to contemporary Mexican art rather than resort spectacle. It reads less well for a family hunting a kids' club or a group after a loud pool scene, since the mood here, as one reviewer put it, is closer to an adults-only auberge than a party hotel. Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure have both named it Mexico's best in recent years, and after a day walking the city, the room's own shower and slippers are a small, welcome return. Hotel Matilda hides a commissioned art collection behind a colonial San Miguel de Allende facade, with Bosco Sodi and Aldo Chaparro pieces filling its thirty-two rooms. Moxi and Bovine cover the food, a hammam spa covers the rest. It suits couples and creatives more than families or party groups.
