On Calle de Jesús, a pedestrian-only cobblestone street two minutes on foot from the pink neo-Gothic towers of the Church of San Miguel Arcángel, a vermillion-walled colonial townhouse holds six suites behind wooden doors old enough to have outlasted several uses before this one. La Valise San Miguel de Allende opened on the 1st of September, 2022, the third property from Yves Naman, who founded the La Valise brand in Tulum in 2014 with a three-room hotel and added an outpost in Mexico City before the San Miguel estate was presented to him in 2016. Naman designed the building himself and handed the decoration to Roberto Ayala, who trained in neither architecture nor interiors but whose eclectic eye the brand had already come to trust. The six suites, ranging from a 24 square metre first-floor room to a 72 square metre suite with its own living room and a granite tub set beneath a cupola, are worked through with the surrealist furniture and wall pieces of Pedro Friedeberg, the Mexican artist whose hand-shaped chairs and invented creatures are built into the plaster, not added on afterward. The aesthetic reads as hacienda crossed with Aztec temple, mid-century black and white in one suite, saturated colonial colour in the next, with Nespresso machines, Loredana toiletries and daily pastries handled quietly rather than announced at check-in. There is no restaurant. Breakfast comes to you, in the courtyard beside a pool with a stone stair disappearing into the water, or on your own terrace, and staff will point you toward the cantinas and wine bars of the historic centre for everything after that. Staying here feels closer to occupying someone's elaborately restored private house than checking into a hotel with a name over the door, an impression the absence of a restaurant, spa menu or lobby does nothing to dispel. It suits a couple or a solo traveller who wants San Miguel's UNESCO centre at walking distance and has no interest in resort infrastructure, and who prefers eating where the city eats to where the hotel would send them. Six suites in total means the courtyard and rooftop rarely hold more than a handful of other guests at once, which is either intimate or claustrophobic depending on your tolerance for overlap with strangers at breakfast. You should not come if you want a restaurant on site, a full spa, or the anonymity of a larger property where you can disappear for a week unrecognised. La Valise also hosts weddings and private events on its rooftop, which means the six suites can occasionally feel secondary to someone else's celebration. You should come for the art, for Friedeberg's work built into a building this old, for a location inside the pedestrian core of one of Mexico's best-preserved colonial cities, and for a version of hospitality that treats six rooms as a ceiling rather than a starting point.
