Hotel & Spa le Doge occupies a 1930s private mansion in Casablanca's Art Deco district, within walking distance of Place Mohammed V, the Cathédrale Sacré-Cœur and Parc de la Ligue Arabe. Sixteen rooms are spread across five floors, each one decorated in tribute to a different Art Deco-era figure, from Coco Chanel to Ernest Hemingway, so no two nights here look the same. That is what separates it from the chain hotels along the nearby boulevards: a former private residence, now a Relais & Châteaux address, that never lost its domestic scale. Rooms range from a 323-square-foot double to a 592-square-foot Junior King Suite, each with a private bathroom, air conditioning and a minibar, and some with soundproofing or an indoor fireplace. Downstairs, the day moves between Le Jasmine, serving traditional Moroccan dishes, and Le Doge Café's rooftop, which trades in Mediterranean plates and skyline views. The spa keeps a sauna, steam room and massage rooms, and there is a library and sun deck for slower afternoons. Staff work in Arabic, French and English, and airport transfers and car rental can be arranged on request. Couples sharing a room should bring a marriage certificate to check-in, standard practice in Morocco and worth knowing before you land. The hotel was closed until August 24 this year and has only just reopened its doors. It suits travellers who want a house with a history rather than a lobby with a view, and anyone chasing a beach club, a large pool or a conference floor should look elsewhere.
