Casa das Penhas Douradas - Burel Mountain Hotels
At 1,500 metres in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the building that now holds Casa das Penhas Douradas began as a sanatorium, where patients once came to breathe air rarefied enough to treat tuberculosis. Eighteen rooms remain, seventeen panoramic doubles and one suite, wrapped in birch and cork, with burel, a traditional Portuguese wool fabric dating back to the eleventh century, covering sofas, ottomans, and even the walls. Fireplaces crackle through three living rooms in winter, and rooms include a bathrobe and slippers. Downstairs, the mountain spa has a Vichy shower, sauna, and hot tub, and the heated indoor pool looks straight out over the range. The panoramic restaurant works local ingredients into dishes for vegetarians and vegans without treating either as an afterthought. What sets it apart from other mountain hotels is the Burel Factory next door: guided visits to a working wool mill where nineteenth-century looms still turn out the same fabric lining the hotel's own rooms, a living industry rather than a museum piece. Over 250 kilometres of marked trails start at the front door, leading to peaks, valleys, and mountain villages most visitors to Portugal never see; bicycles are free to borrow, and kayaks let guests explore the rivers once summer opens the lagoons for swimming. This suits walkers and couples drawn to fireplaces, wool textures, and a view over the range rather than a packed activity board. It will not suit large groups, since the hotel holds just eighteen rooms across two floors, or anyone travelling with a dog, since pets aren't allowed. People once travelled here to breathe; the air, and the quiet it buys, remain the real reason to make the climb. Built from the ruins of a tuberculosis sanatorium at 1,500 metres in the Serra da Estrela, this eighteen-room hotel wraps rooms in burel wool woven at the mill next door. It suits walkers and quiet-seeking couples, not large groups or travellers with dogs, since pets aren't allowed.
The restaurant offers vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options alongside breakfast.
