At Peso da Régua, a vineyard first planted in 1616 climbs the hillside above the Douro River, and Torel Quinta da Vacaria sets its rooms into that slope so most look out over vines and mountains rather than a road. The estate makes its own DOC and Port wines from those rows, and sommelier-led tastings and harvest walks feel like the reason to come, not an add-on. What separates it from other Douro estates with a view is Schistó, the only Michelin-starred restaurant in the valley, a fourteen-seat room where chef Vitor Matos serves a ten-course tasting menu built on what the estate and its neighbours grow. There is a second restaurant, a gastrobar, one of the region's largest spas, an indoor pool and a gym, plus a 24-hour desk, doorman, ATM, shuttle transfers and free parking. Rooms are named rather than numbered, Calma and Vinho do Porto among them, ranging from an Executive Room with a view to Duplex and Junior Deluxe suites that sleep three adults and a child, each with air conditioning, a stocked bathroom and, in some, a balcony. This suits a couple or friends spending a long weekend moving slowly between vineyard, cellar and dining room, who will use a wine list deeper than the label. It suits less well anyone chasing a lively pool scene or children's programming, since childcare here means babysitting on request, not a kids' club. Staff speak several languages, including Turkish, and the hotel is wheelchair accessible and sustainability certified. What stays with you afterward is not the view but the wine in the glass at dinner, poured a few hundred metres from where you slept.
