THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Ellerman House Hotel
Ellerman House sits high above Bantry Bay in a 1906 seaside house that still feels like a private home rather than a hotel, with only thirteen rooms across three floors and a collection of South African art that ranks among the country's most significant in private hands. Cape Town's centre is four kilometres away, and Clifton Bay Beach and Milton Beach are close enough for a walk. The Wine Gallery holds rare Cape vintages alongside smaller producers, and guided tastings go deeper than a poured glass, while indigenous gardens modelled on Kirstenbosch soften the grounds between the house and the ocean. Two villas extend the property beyond the main house, each with its own chef and hospitality team: Villa One sleeps up to ten across 696 square metres with an infinity pool, Villa Two suits groups of six. Inside the house there's a spa with sauna and steam room, an outdoor and an indoor pool, a library, and a fitness room, with a doctor on call and massage by reservation. This suits couples and small groups drawn to art and wine as much as scenery, and travellers who want a hotel run like someone's well-kept house rather than a resort. It will frustrate anyone hoping to bring children, since guests fourteen and under aren't permitted, and pets aren't allowed either. What no comparable Cape Town address offers at this scale is the art itself, built into a private collection since 1988 and woven through the corridors rather than curated behind glass. Thirteen rooms, one house, one collection you will not find repeated anywhere else on the Atlantic seaboard. Ellerman House is a thirteen-room 1906 home above Bantry Bay with a significant private art collection and a Wine Gallery of rare Cape vintages, plus two villas for groups wanting the whole house. Children fourteen and under aren't permitted.

South African artworks, spanning established masters and contemporary voices, are placed throughout Ellerman House's rooms and corridors as part of everyday life rather than a separate gallery. Guests can encounter pieces quietly during their stay or join private tours exploring the artists and stories behind the collection.
