The estate sits atop the Helshoogte Pass outside Stellenbosch, and the terrace at Delaire Graff Restaurant looks straight down the Banghoek Valley toward Simonsberg Peak, vineyards and olive groves stacked below in rows. Ten lodges are all there are, spread across a garden of more than 350 indigenous plants where sculptures by Anton Smit and Lionel Smit stand among reflective pools, so the estate reads more like a private art collection you happen to be able to sleep in. It was founded by diamantaire Laurence Graff, and the boutique on site is the only Graff store on the continent, a detail no neighbouring wine estate can match. Rooms range from Garden and Standard lodges to Luxury and Superior Lodges with private pools, up to the 1,399-square-foot Presidential Lodge, each with a fireplace, bathrobe and minibar, and an extra bed costs 1,500 ZAR a night. Days move between the outdoor and indoor pools, a spa with sauna, steam room and massage, hiking trails, a library, and free bicycle rental, while dinner rotates between the main restaurant, Hōseki's Japanese menu framed by Table Mountain, and Lorenzo's. Guests are asked to send an arrival time ahead of check-in at 2pm so staff can prepare, which suits travellers happy to plan rather than turn up unannounced. Couples marking an occasion, wine collectors, and art-attentive travellers will find little to fault; anyone hoping for a buzzing lobby, a big pool scene, or a hotel that fills up fast will find ten rooms and a five-kilometre distance from town too quiet. What stays with you afterward is not the service, which is exact, but the sense of having spent a few days inside someone's private collection. Couples and wine collectors will linger; anyone wanting a lively hotel with more than a handful of rooms should look elsewhere.
