THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Plettenberg Hotel
On the rocky headland where Plettenberg Bay meets the Indian Ocean, The Plettenberg Hotel looks out on whatever the sea is doing that day, whale season, dolphin pods working the bay, or bungee jumpers and canopy tours running in the countryside behind it. That headland setting, with views running from ocean to mountain to golden beach, is part of why Condé Nast Traveler readers voted it the number one hotel in South Africa in 2025, a distinction none of the other Garden Route addresses nearby can claim. The 37 rooms and suites, built in 1988 and spread over three floors, are individually decorated rather than issued from a template, ranging from a 323-square-foot double to a two-bedroom villa near 2,150 square feet, built more for a family or two couples than a solitary retreat. Days settle into a rhythm of the indoor or outdoor pool, a massage or steam room, a set of tennis or a session at the diving club, then the bar and restaurant as the light drops, while a playroom and babysitting mean children are not an afterthought. Staff answer guests in English and German, check-in opens at three, and a short walk covers the distance into town and down to Plettenberg Bay Beach, so this suits someone who wants coastline and quiet over nightlife and city buzz; anyone chasing sleek, minimal design or a scene after dark will find the mood here more contemplative than that. What stays with a guest afterward is not the amenity list but the position itself, a hotel that turns its whole front toward the water and lets the Garden Route do the rest. On a rocky headland in Plettenberg Bay, this 37-room hotel was voted South Africa's number one hotel by Condé Nast Traveler readers in 2025. It suits divers, spa-goers and whale watchers wanting quiet over nightlife, less so anyone after minimalist design or a late scene.

The Plettenberg stands on the site of the old Lookout Hotel, a property Liz and Gerald McGrath already owned. It opened as The Plettenberg in 1988 after extensive alterations and refurbishments transformed it into an exclusive country house-style hotel on the Plettenberg Bay headland.
An extra bed can be added for a fee of 1,350 ZAR per night, depending on the room category.
Babysitting and a children's playroom are available for younger guests.
