THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Eden Roc
By mid-morning the private harbour at Hotel Eden Roc is already busy: an instructor rigging a sailboat, someone testing a wakeboard, kayaks lined up on the dock before the lake wind picks up. The hotel bills itself as Switzerland's only true beach resort, and the claim rests on real infrastructure: a private beach, its own harbour and a water sport school covering sailing, wakeboarding, water-skiing, kayaking, windsurfing, diving and fishing, launched from the grounds on Lake Maggiore in Ascona. Built in 1971 and set across four floors with 95 rooms, the property belongs to The Leading Hotels of the World and to the Tschuggen Collection. The kitchen carries its own weight: Marco Campanella runs La Brezza, holder of two Michelin stars and 19 GaultMillau points, and the grounds include Casa Epper, the former house of Swiss impressionist Ignaz Epper, now given over to art exhibitions. Rooms run from an Economy Small Double through Comfort, Superior and Deluxe doubles with lake views to Junior and one-bedroom suites. Families get a kids club, playroom and babysitting; couples get a spa with sauna, steam room and massage alongside heated, indoor and outdoor pools. Anyone happy to plan a day around sailing lessons and a tasting menu will use most of what's here; anyone hoping for a small, unstaffed retreat with little on the agenda will find a resort instead, with a business center and conference hall alongside the water sport school. Pets are welcome for a nightly fee, an extra bed costs 190 CHF, and parking is charged rather than included. What lingers is the harbour at first light, rigged and ready before the town stirs. Hotel Eden Roc's harbour puts sailing, wakeboarding and diving steps from the room, backed by a two-Michelin-star kitchen at La Brezza. Built in 1971 on Lake Maggiore in Ascona, it suits active travelers and families more than anyone wanting a quiet, unstaffed retreat.

Hotel Eden Roc keeps its own private beach and marina on Lake Maggiore, run alongside a dedicated watersports school. Guests can sail, wakeboard, water-ski, ride banana boats, kayak or stand-up paddle directly from the hotel's shoreline, giving it lake-level access to organised watersports rarely found at a Swiss hotel.
