THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Aida-Castel
Snow-dusted peaks fill the window at breakfast while a private buffet is laid for two, and the day ahead can be spent as slowly as the guest likes, since Hotel Aida-Castel keeps to just 18 rooms and runs as an adults-only address. The wellness floor is the reason to linger: a 300-square-metre space with a heated indoor pool under a wooden vault, jacuzzi, hammam, sauna and steam room, plus a fitness centre for anyone unwilling to skip a session. In summer the outdoor pool opens onto the Alps themselves; in winter the property connects straight into skiing, with passes, a ski school, shuttle and storage handled on site. Dinner is where Aida-Castel separates itself from the rest of Crans-Montana's five-star crowd: Le Partage, the restaurant helmed by chef Franck Reynaud's team, serves shared, seasonal plates with rotisserie dishes worth booking a day ahead. Beyond the spa and the table, there is a casino and bowling for an evening that isn't wellness-themed, tennis, golf nearby, hiking and cycling routes, and a garden and terrace for anyone who'd rather do nothing at all. Pets travel too, for a fee. This suits a couple or a solo traveller after quiet, well-run luxury rather than a full-service family resort, and it will frustrate anyone hoping to bring children along, since the whole property is built around adult guests. With only 18 keys, book ahead; this isn't a hotel that fills rooms to compensate for a slow season. Eighteen rooms, an adults-only Alpine base in Crans-Montana with a proper spa floor, Franck Reynaud's kitchen at Le Partage, and ski-in convenience for winter. It rewards travellers who want quiet and good food, not families or big groups.
