THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Domaine de Chateauvieux
Domaine de Chateauvieux sits above the Rhône in Satigny, ten kilometres of vineyard road from central Geneva, its sixteenth-century farmhouse walls looking out at the river, the Jura mountains and the neighbouring vines. Chef Philippe Chevrier has run the kitchen here since 1986, and the restaurant has held a Michelin star and a 19/20 rating from Gault et Millau for more than two decades, a level of consistency few countryside hotels can claim. The hotel itself stays small on purpose: thirteen rooms, so a stay feels less like checking into a hotel and more like being folded into a working gastronomic estate, with a kitchen garden, a terrace over the vines and a cellar holding more than 20,000 bottles. Rooms run from a compact single with a courtyard view to a duplex suite, most around 323 square feet, each with air conditioning, minibar, safe and a private bathroom stocked with bathrobe and slippers. Breakfast is a buffet with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options, and the restaurant and bar cover the rest of the day. Free parking, bicycle rental, hiking trails and horse riding sit alongside the wine, and pets are allowed. This suits a couple building a trip around one serious dinner and a quiet countryside night rather than city sightseeing; it does less for anyone wanting a pool, a spa menu or nightlife nearby. The property closes for a week at Easter, two weeks in late July and August, and two weeks over Christmas and New Year, so dates need checking before anything else. What no comparable address near Geneva offers is this combination: two decades of a 19/20 Gault et Millau score wrapped around just thirteen rooms. Thirteen rooms wrapped around a restaurant that has held 19/20 from Gault et Millau for more than twenty years, led by chef Philippe Chevrier since 1986. Expect Rhône and Jura views, not a spa or a pool. Closed at Easter, late summer and Christmas, so check dates first.
