THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Waldhotel Doldenhorn
In Kandersteg, a short walk from the village center, the Maeder family has run this address since 1976, turning a small pension into a 42-room hotel across three floors without losing the feel of a house someone actually lives in. Skis go into dedicated storage before dinner at Au Gourmet, where the Salon bleu's cool, elegant room and the Maeders' kitchen brigade work from a menu built on regional producers; a plainer Bistro next door covers the days when lunch is all that's wanted. Between runs there is an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, solarium and massage room, with a doctor on call for guests who need one. A conference hall and meeting rooms bring in seminar groups, and the hotel holds Relais & Chateaux status. Rooms range from an Economy Queen Room through a Junior Single Suite to a 753-square-foot Standard Suite with bathrobe, minibar and its own safe; family rooms and a bridal suite are also on the list, and pets are welcome for a fee. Staff speak five languages, from English to Italian and Spanish. This suits skiers who want spa recovery built into the day and families juggling different ages who need a playroom, a pool and a library under one roof. It will not suit anyone chasing a fast city pulse or stripped-back minimalism; Kandersteg moves slower, and the hotel leans into that rather than against it. Three generations of one family still greet guests at the door, which is rarer than most brochures make it sound. A 42-room, family-run hotel in Kandersteg with indoor pool, sauna and Relais & Chateaux status, run by the Maeders since 1976. Skiers get spa recovery built into the day; families get a playroom, pool and library under one roof. Not for anyone wanting city pace or bare-bones design.
