At Hôtel Palafitte, mornings begin with a ladder rather than a hallway: guests in a Lake Pavilion can climb down from their private terrace straight into Lake Neuchâtel before the rest of the hotel stirs. Built on stilts over the water in 2002, it remains the only hotel of its kind, a scatter of individual pavilions spread across a single level rather than stacked into floors, so there is no lobby crush and no upper-floor view to compete for. The two room categories, King or Double, both Lake View, run 732 square feet with air conditioning, a private terrace and bathroom. Chef Ludovic Pigeat, who trained at the Lutetia and Cheval Blanc in Paris, runs La Table du Palafitte, its bay windows opening onto the lake; from May to October the Summer Bay Bar sets tables at the waterline, and a fireside bar with a Cigar Lounge takes over once that season ends. Massage is offered in the pavilion itself, by reservation. A private beach, water sport facilities and a spa tub sit alongside golf, skiing and hiking nearby, and a hotel shuttle covers the three kilometers into Neuchâtel for guests who would rather not drive. Pets travel for 30 CHF a night, an extra bed runs 50 CHF, and breakfast costs 38 CHF per person where it is not included. This suits swimmers and anyone who wants water at the doorstep rather than a view of it; it will frustrate travelers set on being in the thick of a city center. Few hotels let a guest leave their room by ladder into a lake, and that alone is reason to pick it over its neighbors on the shore. Hôtel Palafitte is the only hotel built on stilts over Lake Neuchâtel, its pavilions fitted with a terrace ladder straight into the water. Chef Ludovic Pigeat, formerly of the Lutetia and Cheval Blanc, runs the restaurant. It rewards swimmers, not those wanting a city-center address.

The Summer Bay Bar

From May to September, this feet-in-the-water terrace becomes the region's favourite summer spot, bordering Lake Neuchâtel with a beach-club atmosphere.
