THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Matthiol Boutique Hotel
At Moosstrasse 40, the road stops belonging to cars long before it reaches the Matthiol; Zermatt keeps its centre free of engines, so guests arrive without a car of their own, bags in tow, with the Matterhorn framed above the roofline. The hotel sits on three floors with thirty-three rooms, close enough to the Matterhorn Express and Zermatt-Furi lifts that skis go on at the door and come off there too, backed by ski-in, ski-out access, a resident ski school and storage. Inside, the pace slows: the spa runs to a sauna, steam room and massage room, and the restaurant, Filet et Fils, builds its menu on regional mountain cooking, anchored by a wagyu entrecôte served tableside as the house signature. Come winter, private fondue kotas outside seat up to six for cheese and Valais charcuterie, a touch few boutique hotels in town bother to offer. Rooms run to two categories, Standard and Deluxe King, each fitted with a fridge, minibar, bathrobe and slippers, one of only thirty-three across the whole hotel. Playrooms and babysitting mean children are accounted for, though anyone hoping to drive up and park outside will need Täsch instead, since Zermatt allows no cars and the hotel itself keeps none. Pets travel for a modest daily fee, and staff manage the switch between English, French and German without missing a beat. This suits skiers who want the lift closer than the car park, and couples drawn to a slower, wood-toned kind of Alpine week; it suits less anyone chasing nightlife or a sprawling resort feel. What lingers afterward is the fondue kota under the peaks, a detail that outlasts the room itself. Matthiol sits three floors deep in car-free Zermatt, skis on and off at the door via the Matterhorn Express lift. Filet et Fils serves a tableside wagyu entrecôte and, in winter, private fondue kotas for up to six. It suits skiers and slow-paced couples more than anyone chasing nightlife.

The hotel's Spa Doppelzimmer offers a private sauna with steam bath and a freestanding tub facing the Zermatt mountains, spread across 33 square metres. Described by the property as a personal wellness oasis, it suits quiet days, romantic evenings or a honeymoon amid the Swiss Alps.
