THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Grand Hotel Zermatterhof
For much of its history, two Lipizzaner horses met guests arriving at Zermatt's train station and walked them the short, car-free stretch to Bahnhofstrasse 55, where local families built the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof plank by plank in 1879. It sits on the main street in its own private park, with the Matterhorn visible from many windows and the Zermatt-Furi, Matterhorn Express, and Matterhorn glacier paradise lifts a walk away. The 69 rooms, spread over five floors, range from Standard Doubles to a Junior Suite with mountain views; ask for specifics before booking, since fittings vary by category. Two restaurants cover the culinary ground: Prato Borni for alpine-French cooking, Brasserie Lusi for a more classic French and Mediterranean menu, plus two bars and a terrace looking onto the garden. The Vita Borni spa, opened in December 2025, has a 15-by-5-metre indoor pool, two Matterhorn-facing jacuzzis, a Finnish sauna, a steam room, and an ice fountain, alongside a 24-hour gym. Five meeting rooms take groups from five to three hundred, and a playroom with babysitting covers families who bring children. Skiers get storage, passes, and a school on-site; pet owners pay a fee rather than leave the dog behind. None of this suits anyone chasing quiet isolation or a private driveway: Zermatt is car-free and the hotel sits squarely in the middle of town. Nor does it suit those counting francs: this is a member of Preferred Hotels and Resorts and Swiss Deluxe Hotels, not a budget stopover. What it does have, and few Zermatt addresses can claim, is 147 years of guests trusting its discretion, from mountaineers to Walt Disney, without anyone making a show of it. Grand Hotel Zermatterhof has stood on Zermatt's main street since 1879, a short walk from the Matterhorn lifts, with a spa that opened in December 2025. It suits skiers and spa-goers wanting everything on one property, not those seeking quiet outside town or a lower rate.

Built by local Zermatt families and opened in 1879, the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof sits in the heart of the village with Matterhorn views and has welcomed kings, Hollywood figures and mountaineers over nearly 150 years. Its history-steeped setting combines discretion and tradition with a private park just off the main street.
