THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Sukhothai Bangkok
Walk past the palm-lined entrance on South Sathorn Road and the noise of Bangkok's business and embassy district drops into 1.5 hectares of gardens and lily ponds, a scale of grounds unusual for a hotel in this part of the city. The Sukhothai Bangkok takes its name from the ancient kingdom of the same name, and that heritage, over 750 years of Thai art and architecture, shows in the chedis and pagodas referenced through the property's design, across 210 rooms on nine floors where teak wood furnishings and Thai fabrics sit next to Nespresso machines and Harman Kardon sound systems. The 25-metre infinity-edge pool sits inside those gardens rather than on a rooftop, and the spa adds a sauna, steam room and massage alongside a separate fitness studio. Seven restaurants and bars run from Celadon's Thai cooking to La Scala's Italian menu and drinks at The Zuk Bar, enough variety for a stay longer than a night or two. Staff speak Chinese, English and Japanese, and a business centre, conference hall and event facilities make this a workable choice for anyone here for meetings, six kilometres from the city centre near Lumpini Park. That distance from the tourist strip also marks who this doesn't suit, travellers wanting to fall out of a hotel door into nightlife will find it quieter and more formal instead. Pets are allowed for a fee, check-in runs from 2pm, checkout at noon. What sets this apart in a business and embassy district is that garden, a real one, palms and lily ponds intact, still sitting there however busy the city gets outside the gate. The Sukhothai Bangkok sits behind 1.5 hectares of gardens and lily ponds in Bangkok's business and embassy district, its 210 rooms drawing on the ancient kingdom's architecture. Seven restaurants, a 25-metre pool and a spa fill the grounds, better suited to quiet stays and meetings than nightlife on the doorstep.

Guest rooms and suites at The Sukhothai Bangkok pair Thai design cues with modern luxury, featuring Nespresso coffee machines, large flat-screen high-definition televisions and a Harman Kardon audio system. Bath amenities are curated for comfort, and rooms across the main and club wings are positioned by the property as offering every modern luxury a guest could imagine.
