THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
22 PIECES Kyoto
The first thing you'll likely do after check-in at 22 Pieces isn't unpack, it's open the fridge and decide what to cook, because every one of the 22 rooms here comes with its own kitchen, refrigerator and microwave, a setup few Kyoto hotels bother with. The building is modest, four floors, 22 units, with several studios opening onto a private balcony or terrace. It sits roughly 4km out from central Kyoto, close enough to walk toward Kyoto Tower and Higashi Honganji Temple, far enough that you won't hear tour groups at 7am. Bikes are available to rent on site, useful for covering that distance without relying on taxis. The front desk runs 24 hours and the staff speak English, and the building has a lift with wheelchair access, which matters given there's no ground-floor-only option. A playground keeps children occupied, and one child aged five or under stays free sharing the room's existing bedding, so this reads better for a family on a week-long stay than for a couple chasing a rooftop bar. There isn't one: alcohol isn't served here at all, so anyone planning an in-room nightcap should look elsewhere. Check-in is from 4pm, check-out by 11am, and a city tax of JPY 200 to 1,000 per person per night is added at the property. What you get instead of polish is a place that functions like an apartment, which is exactly the point if you're staying long enough for that to matter. For longer Kyoto stays where cooking your own dinner beats room service, 22 Pieces offers 22 kitchen-equipped studios roughly 4km from the center, bikes to rent, but no alcohol on site and no bar culture to speak of.
