THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
BnA Alter Museum Kyoto
At BnA Alter Museum Kyoto, the staircase itself is the main event: climb the open stairwell at the center of the building and you pass through gallery floors threaded with sound, light and dialogue, built into a 30-meter vertical shaft that rises through all ten stories. The 31 rooms were each handed to a different Japanese artist to treat as a permanent, livable installation, so no two are alike, and a chunk of what you pay is routed back to the artist who made the room you're sleeping in, under what the hotel calls its revenue share system, a structure that is genuinely unusual in a city thick with ryokan and chain boutique hotels. Downstairs there's a bar called untitled, a museum shop, and a cafe/lounge that function as the social gravity of the place rather than an afterthought, and the location backs that up: five minutes on foot to Gion, another five to Kawaramachi's bars and restaurants, with Yasaka Shrine, Nishiki Market, Kenninji Temple and Pontocho Alley all within easy walking range. A 24-hour front desk, concierge, tour desk and doctor-on-call cover the practical side, Wi-Fi is free throughout, and the hotel is wheelchair accessible and LGBTQ+ friendly. Breakfast is cooked to order but costs extra, as does the city's lodging tax, charged per person per night at the property. This suits someone who wants a room she'll remember rather than one that merely functions, and who doesn't mind that quiet, neutral and interchangeable is exactly what's missing here. It is not the place for a traveller who wants to forget she's inside someone else's artwork the moment she closes the door. A ten-story staircase gallery runs through this 31-room Kyoto hotel, where each room is a livable installation funded in part by its own stay. Five minutes from Gion, it suits travellers who want their room to be part of the story.
