THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Shinsho-an Kyoto
At eight in the morning, breakfast arrives from Higashiyama Ogata, the restaurant on the ground floor, carried up through a house built from timber chosen for how it ages, not how it starts. Shinsho-an sits in front of the gates of Nanzenji, a Zen Buddhist temple in Okazaki, a quiet corner of Kyoto thick with shrines, art museums and history, and it holds exactly four rooms, Shin, Sho, Raku and Gyo, each facing the garden or the Higashiyama hills. The timber itself is the point: wood grown over decades in natural forests, worked by sukiya-style carpenters whose joinery is meant to gain grace with use. On the garden's east side stands Hanare, a 14.5 square metre teahouse built in 1966 by master carpenter Sotoji Nakamura, where staying guests can sit with a drink and watch the light change. Dinner at Higashiyama Ogata starts at seven, breakfast runs from eight to ten and can be taken in the room. This is not a hotel you simply book: reservations go through a referral, by name or by the magazine that pointed you here, and a reply can take a few days, which filters out anyone chasing a last-minute room. It suits a traveller who wants Kyoto distilled into one carefully made building and is willing to wait for the privilege, not someone wanting a concierge desk, a pool, or a room she can confirm tonight. The communal areas are wheelchair-accessible, and one guestroom has bathroom handrails. It's a seven-minute walk from Higashiyama Station, twenty minutes by taxi from Kyoto Station, and worlds away from anything resembling a chain. Four rooms, one referral-only waitlist, and a 1966 teahouse by a master carpenter: Shinsho-an in Okazaki, Kyoto, rewards patience with a stay inside living wood, not a brochure's version of Japan.
