Grand Hotel Cocumella *****
The lift at Grand Hotel Cocumella does not stop at a floor; it drops through ancient tufa caves to a private beach on the Gulf of Naples, a descent no other hotel on this stretch of coast can offer. The hotel began in 1637 as a Jesuit residence and opened to travellers in 1777, hosting Goethe, Mary Shelley, Hans Christian Andersen and Sigmund Freud on the Grand Tour, and its terraced gardens and old stone corridors still carry that history rather than manufactured grandeur. Fifty rooms sit across three floors, most facing the Gulf of Naples or the centuries-old citrus park, and no two are furnished alike. Guests eat across three kitchens: Scintilla for refined Mediterranean plates, L'Agrumeto in the shade of the orange grove, and Coku for grilled fare and cocktails, all drawing on vegetables from the hotel's own organic garden. Beyond the beach there is a semi-Olympic pool among the orange trees, a spa with sauna, steam room and massage treatments, a tennis court and a fitness centre. For trips further along the coast, the hotel keeps its own boat, the Vera 1880, one of the oldest sailing vessels still working the Mediterranean, used for excursions to Capri, Nerano and Positano. This suits a couple or small group who want history built into their comfort and don't mind paying for it, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World with staff fluent in five languages. It suits less anyone chasing an anonymous resort or a big family trip on a budget, given the extra-bed surcharge and Italy's local gala-dinner fees. What lingers afterward is not the suites but that walk through the caves to the sea. Grand Hotel Cocumella has welcomed travellers since 1777, its lift still carrying guests through tufa caves to a private beach on the Gulf of Naples. Three restaurants, an orange-grove pool and its own century-old sailing boat set it apart from newer neighbours on the coast.

Set within a fragrant garden of citrus and century-old trees, the semi-Olympic pool offers a quiet retreat close to the sea. A beach club nearby lets guests move between sun, sea and pool, while the adjoining spa provides massages and body treatments for further relaxation.
Air conditioning, central heating and a fan ensure that rooms maintain comfortable temperatures. Guests can relax and enjoy the sea views from the balcony or private terrace of some rooms. The rooms have a queen-size bed and a sofa bed. Separate bedrooms are available. Extra beds can be requested. A safe, a minibar and a desk are also available. Additional features include a refrigerator, a mini fridge and a tea/coffee station. A trouser press is provided for guests' convenience. A telephone, a television with satellite and pay-per-view channels, a CD player, a DVD player, an alarm clock and WiFi are provided as well. Slippers are included. Bathrooms are equipped with a shower, a bathtub and a whirlpool bath. A hairdryer, bathrobes and a telephone are available for daily use. As a special feature, bathrooms are also stocked with cosmetic products and a selection of towels. The hotel has non-smoking rooms.
The indoor and outdoor pools are ideal for exercise as well as relaxation. Guests can treat themselves to refreshing drinks at the poolside snack bar and a relaxing soak in the hot tub. A short break or an entire afternoon on the sun terrace, which features outdoor lounge chairs and umbrellas, is time well spent. For guests who wish to keep active, cycling/mountain biking, tennis and golf are available. Sports and recreation facilities at the hotel include a gym, callisthenics and aerobics. Various wellness options are available at the hotel, including a spa, a sauna, a steam bath, a hammam, a beauty salon, massage treatments and a solarium. Copyright GIATA 2004 - 2025.
