THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Terra - The Magic Place
Terra - The Magic Place sits three kilometers outside Sarentino, a ten-room hotel run by three siblings, Gisela at reception and in the wine cellar, Heinrich in the kitchen, Karl handling the rest, and their restaurant carries two Michelin stars, the highest-lying starred kitchen in all of Italy. That single fact separates it from every other small hotel in these mountains: guests come as much for Heinrich's tasting menus built from foraged herbs and organic produce as for the rooms themselves. Days here run toward hiking trails toward Catinaccio Mountain, Val Gardena and the Ciampedie Plateau, or toward the ski storage room if snow is the plan, then back to a wellness area with sauna, steam room, spa tub and massage before dinner. A library, a garden terrace and a playroom round out the property, and pets travel along for a small fee. This suits people who want to disappear into a mountain routine of walking, eating well and saying little, wine drinkers who take a tasting menu seriously, and travelers happy to arrive by car or arrange the hotel's transfer rather than walk into town, since the center is a few kilometers off and airport transfer runs 300 euros one way. It does not suit anyone chasing nightlife, a large resort feel, or rock-bottom rates: extra beds cost 85 euros a night, a cleaning tax is billed separately at checkout, and Italian gala dinner surcharges can apply. What stays with you is quieter than the Michelin stars suggest: an actual family still running the house their grandfather began, and a kitchen with deer visible from its windows in the early morning. A ten-room family-run hotel above Sarentino with a two-Michelin-starred restaurant, the highest in Italy, plus sauna, steam room and hiking trails toward the Dolomites. It rewards travelers wanting mountain quiet and serious food, not those seeking a city-center base or a bargain stay.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Terra traces back to Johann Brugger, grandfather of current hosts Heinrich and Gisela, who turned an alpine hut into the inn 'Alpenrose' and built the Sarner Ski Hut in 1940. His daughter and her husband later founded the Auener Hof, the hotel's predecessor, carrying the family's mountain roots into today's small, personally run house.
