THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Miramalfi
The road out of Amalfi's historic center runs along the cliff for about 800 metres, a five-minute walk or a short ride on the hotel's private shuttle, before the Miramalfi comes into view, built into the rock face rather than set beside it, its 36 rooms and suites stacked across terraces above the Tyrrhenian Sea. Francesco Mansi opened the hotel in 1956, choosing the cliff over the more obvious seafront plot after years spent in Mexico, a decision that put every terrace, the restaurant, and eventually the pool on a direct line to the water. Nearly seventy years on, the same family still runs it: Alessandro Mansi and his mother, Ferida Fava, who serves as general manager and led the most recent renovation in 2022, the fourth generation to hold the keys to a building where, as the family tells it, one relative was born in a guest room. Inside, the mid-century structure has been kept largely as built, with handcrafted ceramic floors, terraces fitted with sunbeds rather than furniture chosen for photographs, and rooms ranging from 25 to 45 square metres across five categories, the largest with a soaking tub and its own terrace. The fine-dining restaurant, Donna Emma, named for one of the hotel's founders, was redesigned by architect Antonio Girardi in tones deliberately darker than the terrace outside, with a black-and-white checkerboard floor, a grand piano in the corner, and windows the length of the room looking straight out over the Gulf of Amalfi. In the kitchen is Antonino D'Alessio, thirty years old and from Piano di Sorrento, who started at Don Alfonso 1890 in Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi at sixteen and brings that two-Michelin-starred training to a menu built on the coast's own produce. Below, a lift drops guests to a saltwater pool cut into the rock and a small beach club, the closest thing the Miramalfi has to a public stage. What it offers is proximity without immersion: close enough to Amalfi to walk in for dinner or Mass at the Duomo, far enough above it that the crowds on the harbour front stay a shuttle ride away. The rooms are quiet in the way cliffside rooms are quiet, water and gulls rather than scooters and market stalls, and the pace of a stay here is set by the tide table and the restaurant's dinner service more than by any itinerary. It suits a couple who wants a base rather than a schedule, or a solo traveller happy to read on a terrace for three hours before deciding whether to move. You should not come if you want to walk to a beach without a lift, or if a hotel restaurant built around one chef's tasting menu feels like too much commitment for a week. You should come if you want the Amalfi Coast's water and light without its worst crowds, and a family who have spent seventy years working out exactly how to place a terrace. The short version: A 36 room cliffside hotel 800 metres from Amalfi, run by the Mansi family since 1956, with a two Michelin trained chef, a saltwater pool cut into the rock, and mid century interiors kept mostly as built.
