Bellevue Syrene

Piazza della Vittoria in Sorrento sits above a working stretch of the Gulf of Naples, and it is here, on foundations laid by a Roman villa of the second century BC, that the Counts Mastrobuono built their summer residence in 1750. The tufa cisterns and nymphaea from that earlier villa are still visible, worked into the structure rather than roped off as relics, and in 1820 the house became a hotel, one of the first in Sorrento and now one of the oldest still operating anywhere on this coast. Louis II of Bavaria stayed here, as did Empress Eugénie of France, Ivan Turgenev, King Paul of Greece, and Marguerite Yourcenar, who wrote her Coup de Grâce in one of its rooms in 1938. The Russo family bought the hotel roughly thirty years ago, and it is Elsa Russo who now runs it, filling the salons with art the way she might furnish her own house rather than a hotel's public rooms. Fifty rooms and suites look out, almost without exception, toward Vesuvius across the water. Between 1905 and 1907, William Waldorf Astor, taken with the site's Roman bones, had a reproduction of Pompeii's House of the Vettii built inside the hotel, and the resulting Villa Pompeiana now holds two function rooms and a colonnaded terrace. Suite Roccia is carved directly from the tufa rock, with a hydrotherapy pool set into the bedroom itself, while Suite Pompeiana keeps a hot tub facing the sea. Elsa Russo's collection runs through the corridors and sitting rooms: works by Mimmo Jodice, Riccardo Dalisi, Gennaro Sardella, and Paolo Sandulli alongside her father Giovanni Russo's collection of roosters, none of it arranged to look like a gallery. La Terrazza serves dinner with the bay directly below it, a small mosaicked pool sits above the water, and a lift, or a set of steps cut into the rock centuries ago, takes you down to the hotel's private beach. The club lounge keeps drinks and snacks running for guests through the day. Two Michelin Keys, awarded in 2024, and Relais & Châteaux membership put it in company with very few other properties on this coast. This is a hotel that wears its two hundred years openly, frescoes and gilt mirrors and chandeliers sitting next to newer art without much apology for the mix, and staying here has more in common with staying in a great-aunt's palazzo than checking into a design hotel. It suits travellers who want history they can touch rather than history explained to them on a laminated card, who don't mind a bit of theatre with their breakfast (there is, most mornings, a pianist), and who would rather be five minutes from Piazza Tasso than twenty minutes from anywhere at all. You should not come if you want the pared-back, deliberately underdecorated look that some boutique hotels now favour, or if you'd rather be somewhere quiet with no wedding parties passing through the Villa Pompeiana on a Saturday in June. You should come for a hotel that has been doing more or less the same thing, very well, since before Italy was a country: sea views from nearly every room, a genuine sense that the building has been lived in rather than staged, and a location in the middle of Sorrento that never asks you to choose between the town and the water.
