THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Castiglion del Bosco
The chapel and the golf course are both on the property, which says most of what needs saying about the scale here. Castiglion del Bosco sits about six kilometres from the centre of Montalcino: a Rosewood estate of forty-two rooms across two floors, built in 2008 and certified to the GSTC criteria. Rooms have indoor fireplaces, soundproofing, bathrobes and minibars, and some interconnect, which matters if the children are coming. They are looked after, with a kids club, a playroom and babysitting for a surcharge, and pets are allowed too. There are two restaurants, one of them Campo del Drago cooking Italian, three bars and lounges, a poolside bar, two outdoor pools and an indoor one. Breakfast is cooked to order from 7 to 10.30 in the morning and charged separately, which is worth knowing before you arrive. The sport runs long: archery, tennis, mini golf, a gym, yoga, hiking and cycling on bicycles the hotel lends free. The spa covers massage, a sauna, a steam room and a solarium. What few Tuscan hotels of this size can match is the golf course, with archery alongside it, on the same grounds as a chapel and a library. The trade-off is distance. This is not somewhere to walk into town after dinner. There is an area shuttle, but it costs extra, and the parking and car hire on site suggest what most guests do instead. Anyone who wants Montalcino itself at the end of the evening should stay in Montalcino. Forty-two rooms and a golf course: the arithmetic is the whole appeal. A Rosewood estate of forty-two rooms six kilometres outside Montalcino, with a golf course, archery, tennis, three pools and a spa on the grounds. Children get a kids club and interconnecting rooms, and pets are welcome. Nobody walks into town from here.
