Castello di Spaltenna takes its address from Località Pieve di Spaltenna, the medieval parish the castle grew up around, and the estate still keeps its own chapel, now used for weddings held on the grounds. It has only 37 rooms, each decorated on its own terms with four-poster or wrought-iron beds, 18th-century writing desks and trunks, and marble-topped chests, so a Junior Suite with its original fireplace and jacuzzi looks nothing like a Terrace Suite, where the private terrace opens onto vineyards instead. Dinner is the reason people return: Il Pievano, the property's Michelin-starred restaurant, serves a creative menu, while La Terrazza keeps things lighter and L'Osteria adds a third option, a range few Chianti castle hotels can match. La Pieve Spa adds a Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, tepidarium and scented showers, and there are two pools, indoor and outdoor, a tennis court, a gym, and bikes for exploring the vineyards beyond the gate. Families get their own suite and babysitting on request, though anyone bringing a dog will need to board it elsewhere, since pets are not permitted. A business center and conference hall are available, but this is not a hotel built around meetings. Check-in runs from 3pm, check-out by noon, and a city tax of five euros per person per night applies from March through October.
