THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Villa Principe Leopoldo Hotel & Spa
At dawn, when the light rises beyond Monte San Salvatore and the Collina d'Oro falls quiet, Villa Principe Leopoldo settles into the view it has held since 1926: a former royal residence on a promontory above Lake Lugano, framed by Monte Brè and San Salvatore, ten minutes by car from the city center and five from the train station. Relais & Châteaux since 2000, it still runs like a private house rather than a hotel chain outpost, with 37 suites, a piano bar with live music, a restaurant, and gardens spilling onto a wide terrace. The Princess Garden Suite, with direct access between bedroom and living room and its own view over the grounds, is worth requesting by name rather than leaving to chance. DOT SPA occupies its own quiet corner of the property, built around personalised treatments and a house line of natural cosmetics, while outside there is a heated outdoor pool, two tennis courts with a resident coach, a gym, a golf course, mini golf, and cycling. Six meeting rooms holding up to 250 people make it as workable for a corporate offsite as for a wedding, and a free shuttle covers the city, airport, and station. Pets are allowed, wheelchairs are accommodated, and babysitting is available for families needing an evening off. None of this suits anyone wanting to walk into Lugano's nightlife, or travelling light on a budget; this is a hotel for people happy to be driven in and stay put. What sets it apart from other grand hotels nearby is the house itself, a residence built for a prince, not retrofitted for guests. That is the difference between staying somewhere and staying in something. A former royal residence above Lake Lugano, Relais & Châteaux since 2000, with 37 suites, a private spa, and gardens spilling onto a terrace. Six meeting rooms and a free shuttle suit a conference as well as a honeymoon; nightlife lovers should stay closer to town.
