THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Splendide Royal
Riva Antonio Caccia runs along the water from Paradiso into central Lugano, and about halfway down it sits the last Belle Époque palace still standing in Ticino: Hotel Splendide Royal, opened in 1887 and now the only hotel on this stretch of lakefront with that kind of history behind its facade. Lake Ceresio sits close enough to the terrace and the panoramic spa pool that the indoor and outdoor pools, sauna and steam room open onto the same view of water and pre-Alps that fills the lake-view rooms upstairs. It suits someone who wants the walk into the historic centre and Piazza della Riforma to matter, a short ten minutes on foot past the shopping streets of Via Nassa, rather than a hotel that could be anywhere. Business groups get event halls, conference space and a business center; families travelling with children get babysitting, highchairs and a garden; pet owners pay a small daily fee and bring the dog anyway. Someone hunting a sleek, minimal design hotel, or a bargain, should look elsewhere: fees for parking, a security deposit at check-in and an extra bed all apply, and gala dinner charges can turn up locally too. Across the 93 rooms and seven floors, La Veranda serves Mediterranean and flambé dishes, I Due Sud and La Piazzetta offer other registers, and the Belle Époque Bar keeps the period detail going after dinner. A free shuttle covers the station and Lugano-Agno Airport, and Lake Como is thirty minutes away by car, Milan about an hour. What no other Lugano address can claim is the building itself, a genuine nineteenth-century palace still doing the job it was built for. Hotel Splendide Royal is Ticino's last surviving Belle Époque palace, set right on Lake Ceresio's promenade with lake-view rooms, a lakeside spa and 93 rooms across seven floors. It suits travellers who want history and water in the same view, not those chasing minimalist design or the lowest bill.

La Veranda, the hotel's restaurant, serves Mediterranean cuisine with flambé specialties prepared for guests. The venue is one of several dining and bar spaces at the Splendide Royal, alongside I Due Sud and La Piazzetta, offering an elevated dining option without leaving the lakeside property during a stay in Lugano.
