Breakfast at Pensão Agrícola is taken on a shaded terrace among orange, fig and almond trees, on land the Silva Gomes family farmed until 1970, seven kilometres inland from Tavira and 1.5 kilometres from the Ria Formosa's deserted beaches. The six rooms split evenly between the original farmhouse and newer garden modules, each with its own private patio, air conditioning, a safe and a minibar, and in the older wing a heated bathroom floor. Atelier Rua's renovation kept the furniture, photographs, clothes and books left behind after forty years of neglect, so the building carries its own history rather than a designer's version of one. A heated plunge pool that doubles as the outdoor pool runs through the cooler months, and there is a library, a solarium, a massage room, free bicycles and walking routes through the Barrocal countryside for guests who would rather move than lounge beside it. This suits couples and solo travellers after quiet and a sense of place: the property is adults-only, has no lift, and can be booked in its entirety for at least three nights outside peak season. It does not suit anyone wanting to walk into Tavira after dinner; the centre is a seven-kilometre drive, and dinner here itself needs booking in advance. What no comparable inland Algarve stay can claim is Jeremias, the farm's donkey, who has watched over the property for decades and, if asked, will still walk guests to the gate.
