THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Palazzo Daniele
Aperitivo happens in a courtyard planted with orange trees, someone playing music nearby, the kind of scene that has nothing to do with a lobby bar and everything to do with a 163-year-old aristocratic residence that only started taking guests in 2019. Palazzo Daniele was built in 1861, the same year Italy became a country, and served one family for four generations before art collector Francesco Petrucci stripped away the excess furnishings and left the frescoed ceilings and mosaic floors exposed, then filled the rooms with site-specific work by Nicolas Party, Roberto Cuoghi and Carla Accardi. That collection, built by someone who also founded a regional art festival, is the one thing here that a design refresh cannot fake. There are only nine rooms and no elevator, so the building asks something of guests who mind stairs. What it gives back: a kitchen run by four Salento women who cook whatever local farmers bring that morning, nothing frozen or canned, paired with natural wines made without chemical intervention. A sauna, steam room and spa sit alongside a seasonal outdoor pool, open May through September, plus a library and a garden for slower hours. Airport transfer can be arranged for a fee, and pets travel with their owners for a small charge. This suits someone drawn to a working art collection and a kitchen with real provenance over a resort checklist. It will not suit anyone who wants a lift, a pool in January, or anonymity among hundreds of rooms. Check-in runs from 2pm, check-out by noon, under ceiling frescoes intentionally left cracked, a reminder that the palazzo was renovated to reveal its age, not hide it. Palazzo Daniele is a 163-year-old family palazzo turned nine-room art hotel in Gagliano del Capo, frescoes left cracked on purpose, kitchen run by four local women cooking the morning's harvest. No elevator, no crowd, just a courtyard of orange trees and a real collection by artists like Nicolas Party.
