Le Fontanelle Hotel
The Chianti Classico region between Florence and Siena is one of the most written-about landscapes in Italy, which means most people arrive with a reasonably clear picture of what to expect. Rolling hills covered in vines, stone farmhouses, cypress trees, the particular quality of late afternoon light. Hotel Le Fontanelle, a 13th-century estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga, is the version of that picture you would design if you were designing it deliberately. It sits high on a hill above the valley, facing out over the vineyards in three directions, and the views from the outdoor pool and the Belvedere Terrace are the kind that make it genuinely difficult to leave the property for Siena. The hotel belongs to the Bolfo family, who also own Vallepicciola, the winery that covers 265 hectares of the surrounding estate and produces Chianti Classico alongside Pinot Nero, Merlot, and Chardonnay. This is relevant to your stay because the wine programme here is serious and specific, with proper cellar dinners and tastings at the winery itself available to guests, which is a more interesting afternoon than a generic wine tour. The 36 rooms are spread across the main manor and a separate villa annex, all with terracotta floors, wooden beams, and that particular Tuscan palette of warm stone and faded linen. The junior suites and suites are worth the upgrade for the extra space and the better views. La Colonna, the restaurant, wraps around a terrace and serves an Italian menu that takes the local produce seriously without being rigid about it. The Belvedere Terrace, where aperitivi are served before dinner, is where the evening should start. The health club, included for all guests, has an indoor heated pool with three enormous arched windows looking out over the hills, a sauna, Turkish bath, and jacuzzi. Mountain bikes are also free to use, and the estate's hiking paths go directly into the vineyards. Siena is 20 kilometres away and the hotel runs a shuttle service. Florence airport is about 80 kilometres. The hotel is open April through October only. This is a hotel for someone who wants to actually be in Chianti rather than passing through it: a few days of very good food, long mornings by the pool, an afternoon at the winery, and the kind of quiet that a working agricultural estate in Tuscany provides without any effort on your part. The short version: A 13th-century Chianti estate with 36 rooms, its own serious winery, an outdoor pool with one of the best views in Tuscany, and enough on the property to justify staying put for several days. Open April to October.

The outdoor pool mirrors the Chianti sky and is set to reflect the surrounding, untouched countryside. Guests can swim in its crystalline waters or simply relax poolside, lulled by the timeless landscape of vineyards and olive groves that stretch around the estate, making it a natural gathering point during warmer months.
For relaxation, guests can enjoy the indoor and outdoor pool complex, a dip in the hot tub, or a workout at the fitness rooms. Wellness options include a spa, a sauna, a steam bath, a hammam, and massage treatments.
Culinary delights await at the onsite restaurant, breakfast room, café, and bar. Dietary needs are catered for with diet meals, gluten-free meals, vegetarian dishes, and children's meals available on request.
