THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka'Upulehu

The Big Island has a way of making even experienced travellers recalibrate. It is bigger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined, still actively volcanic, and in places almost startlingly raw. The Kona-Kohala coast, where lava fields meet the Pacific in long stretches of black rock and white sand, is some of the most beautiful shoreline in the Pacific, and Four Seasons Hualalai sits at its quietest, most unhurried end. This is not a hotel that announces itself. The 243 rooms and suites are arranged in low two-storey bungalows spread across intimate coves along the beachfront, with the result that a property of this size feels surprisingly private, even on a full weekend. The rooms are generous, Hawaiian in their materials and palette without being theatrical about it, and open onto outdoor living areas that make the distinction between inside and outside feel largely decorative, the kind of place where you arrive intending to explore the island and find, three days in, that you have barely left. Part of that is the pools, of which there are eight, a number that sounds excessive until you understand that two are carved from natural volcanic rock, one is an adults-only swim-up bar with ocean views, and one is King's Pond, a 1.8 million-gallon saltwater aquarium where guests swim alongside thousands of tropical fish and, on good days, eagle rays. It is not a gimmick, and it is one of the more quietly extraordinary things you can do at a hotel anywhere. The food is taken seriously in the way that suggests the kitchen has something to prove, with around 75 percent of ingredients sourced from Hawaii Island farms and waters, and the dining at 'ULU Ocean Grill reflecting that with enough confidence to have earned a Forbes star, the only restaurant-rated dining on the island. The spa is built for people who actually use spas, with treatment rooms in open-air hales and ingredients drawn from the landscape immediately around it. Four Seasons Hualalai is, in the end, a resort that rewards the kind of traveller who wants everything done beautifully and without fuss, and who would rather spend a morning snorkelling in a volcanic pond than planning the day around transfers and reservations. It is also where you stay on the Big Island when the island itself is very much what you are after. The short version: 243 rooms and suites in bungalows along the Kona-Kohala coast, the only Forbes Five Star property on the Big Island. Eight pools including King's Pond, a swimmable saltwater aquarium, serious farm-to-coast dining, and a scale that feels far more intimate than the numbers suggest. The right hotel for someone who wants genuine luxury on the island that rewards it most.
