THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Casa Newton
Casa Newton sits on a 150-hectare estate between Montalcino and Montepulciano, its red-walled villa overlooking the UNESCO-listed hills of the Val d'Orcia. The property began as a farmhouse built in 1846 by Gervasio Newton, and the Bertherat family's renovation kept nine rooms and suites across the original villa's three floors, adding two garden suites in the former farm buildings, eleven rooms in total. What sets it apart is the winery on the same land: Fabbrica Pienza, under the same ownership, turns out roughly 35,000 to 40,000 bottles of organic wine and olive oil a year, and the concierge team arranges tastings and a cellar tour a ten-minute walk through the vines. Days here run on their own rhythm, cooking classes built around the vegetable garden, cheesemaker visits, gravel bike tours, or simply the pool below the vineyard's high point. Dinner moves between Ortus, where the kitchen works over fire and embers, and Il Cervo by the pool for breakfast and lunch, reserved for hotel guests. There is no public transport to speak of and taxis are scarce, so this asks for a rental car and a willingness to be a little hard to find, not a base for hopping between towns on foot. Guests with reduced mobility are looked after properly: a lift reaches both floors, two bedrooms are wheelchair-accessible, and a golf cart covers the rest of the grounds. Anyone chasing nightlife or a central piazza should look elsewhere. Anyone who wants eleven rooms, a working vineyard, and Val d'Orcia stretching out from the terrace will not find the combination easily repeated nearby. Eleven rooms in a red-walled Val d'Orcia villa with two garden suites and its own working vineyard, organic wine and olive oil a short walk through the vines. No public transport reaches it, so bring a rental car; reduced-mobility guests get a lift and golf cart.
