THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Masseria Prosperi
Masseria Prosperi sits among olive trees a few steps from the sea, about ten kilometres from central Otranto, and it runs less like a hotel than a working Puglian farm that happens to take guests. There are only six rooms, so guests share the grounds with Frida, Fiocco, Mucchina, Elvis and the rest of the resident farm animals, and with whatever the vegetable garden has produced that day for Antonio's kitchen. Meals move between the restaurant, a bar, and, if preferred, breakfast delivered straight to the room. Outside, a heated outdoor pool sits near a garden of fruit trees, and the spa carries a steam bath, sauna, solarium and massage treatments, part of a place built around the slow passing of time rather than quick stops. Guests cycle or walk the surrounding countryside on request, join a yoga session, arrange a barbecue, or sit out on the terrace, while the concierge sorts transfers, tours, laundry and dry-cleaning in English or Italian. Groups who want the run of the place can book the whole villa, staff included, rather than a single room. There's no lift, and check-in doesn't start until 15:30, both in keeping with a house that isn't built for a quick turnover. It suits couples and small groups who want Salento's coast and countryside without a resort's scale, and who don't mind a farm outside their window. It's not the choice for anyone travelling with a pet, or anyone who wants elevators, a lobby, and strangers passing through all day. What no comparable stay nearby offers is this: a functioning smallholding, animals and all, folded into six rooms a few steps from the sea. A six-room Puglian farmhouse near Otranto, complete with its own vegetable garden, resident animals and a spa built for slow mornings. Good for couples who want countryside and coast together without a resort's scale; not for anyone who needs a lift or is travelling with a pet.
