THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Dimora Cottanera
At Dimora Cottanera, the pool sits at the edge of a working vineyard on the slopes of Etna, and toward evening the surrounding mountains turn gold in the water's reflection. The resort holds just 13 rooms, spread through a restored country house whose owner, Mariangela Cambria, shaped the residence around childhood memories of harvest mornings and bread from the oven. Rooms differ in shape and color scheme but share vineyard or garden views, and come with air conditioning, mini bar, safe and bathrobe; among the suites, three have a private outdoor tub, one has its own sauna, and the master suite looks toward Etna. Breakfast draws on local Sicilian ingredients, and the wellness area looks out over the estate's old wine press, the palmento. Guests can set out hiking, arrange a tour through the resort's assistance desk, or use the conference hall and meeting rooms if business brings them instead. Pets travel for an extra fee, and there is no elevator, so upper floor rooms suit guests comfortable with stairs. This is not a hotel for anyone wanting nightlife on the doorstep; the town center sits eight kilometers away, and evenings here run on wine, quiet and mountain light rather than bars or crowds. What Dimora Cottanera has that few Sicilian properties can claim is a working vineyard, the Cottanera estate, wrapped directly around the rooms, so the estate's own wine, poured at dinner, comes from the vines just outside the window. The gold over the vineyard fades slowly each evening, and the day tends to end there, not in a lobby. A 13-room residence woven into the Cottanera vineyard on Etna's slopes, where the pool overlooks rows of vines and mountains that turn gold at sunset. Suites bring private outdoor tubs and Etna views, though the eight-kilometer distance to town and the lack of an elevator will matter to some travelers.
