THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski
At Kastenmeiers, the hotel's seafood restaurant, saltwater and freshwater tanks hang above the open kitchen, holding trout, char and lobster that will end up on the plate below, a detail no other hotel in Dresden's old town bothers with. Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski sits inside a palace Augustus the Strong built as a gift for his mistress, Countess Cosel, and the walk from the front door reaches the Zwinger, the Frauenkirche and the Semper Opera House. The 213 rooms across five floors emerged from a careful renovation that brought air conditioning, minibars and the kind of soundproofing that matters on a square this central. Guests who want their evenings mapped out will find them here: Bar 1705 pours cocktails styled on the Roaring Twenties, Amalie Pâtisserie & Lounge does a proper afternoon tea by the fireplace, and the spa runs to an indoor pool, saunas and massage treatments booked ahead of arrival. Nine meeting rooms and a Golden Keys concierge make it as workable for a conference as for a wedding, and couples do choose it for exactly that: the same palace once built for a royal affair now hosts theirs, complete with a Bentley or Aston Martin shuttle if asked. It is not a hotel for anyone hunting stripped-back minimalism; the deposit at check-in and the pet surcharge under 5kg say as much. But for a couple, a solo opera-goer, or a small delegation wanting a short walk to the Green Vault and a long dinner under a tank of lobsters, it earns its address. Whether the palace remembers its first tenant is anyone's guess; the fish, at least, seem unbothered. Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski occupies a Dresden palace built by Augustus the Strong for his mistress, steps from the Zwinger and the Frauenkirche. Its rooms sit above Kastenmeiers, where trout and lobster swim in tanks over the open kitchen. It suits couples and conferences, not travellers chasing a plain city break.

The Taschenbergpalais was built by Augustus the Strong as a gift for Countess Cosel, and its historic rooms, chapel and grand staircase now host weddings in Dresden's baroque old town. Couples can choose from four Signature Suites with bay windows for the bridal stay, plus an on-site wedding planner and photography at iconic city landmarks.
