THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Badia di Pomaio
Above Arezzo, on a mountainside planted with olive trees and a working vegetable garden, Hotel Badia di Pomaio occupies a monastery founded in 1645 and rebuilt over two years, finishing in 2019. Arched ceilings and stone stairways remain, and a wooden statue of the abbey's patron Madonna still stands in a niche along the way. The hotel keeps a 0-Km philosophy: an olive grove, beehives, a vegetable garden and a small farm with chickens and goats supply much of what reaches restaurant Campo Badia, a rarer commitment than the pool or the setting alone. That restaurant splits between a terrace against the garden and an indoor room facing an open kitchen window, with a wine cellar tilted toward organic and biodynamic Tuscan bottles, plus Bar Serra for something before dinner. The heated infinity pool looks out over the hills and the city of Arezzo below, and with only 19 rooms across three floors, it rarely feels busy. Superior doubles and Junior suites both bring air conditioning, a private patio, minibar and safe as standard. Couples wanting quiet, cyclists chasing the trails toward Alpe di Poti, and anyone happy to drive rather than walk the six kilometres into central Arezzo will find the pace matches. Families with children under 12 will not: the hotel does not accept them. Free parking and Wi-Fi, a garden, and multilingual staff round things out, though a cleaning tax and possible gala dinner fees turn up separately on the bill. What stays with you afterward is the sense of a place still shaped like what it used to be, a monastery that kept its bones. A 1645 monastery above Arezzo, rebuilt in 2019 with its arched ceilings and stone stairways intact, now runs a heated infinity pool and a 0-Km kitchen fed by its own olive grove, beehives and farm. Nineteen rooms, six kilometres from town, and no children under 12.
