Above Merano, at roughly 1,230 metres in the hamlet of Avelengo-Haflinger, Miramonti's spa appears to float over the Adige Valley, its infinity pool and onsen pool set into a hillside sauna landscape that few Alpine hotels can match. The 44-room property, family run by Carmen and Klaus with a team of seventy, splits its meals across three distinct rooms under one roof: the Panorama Restaurant, Osteria Montana, and the wood-panelled Stube, where a local beef tartare is minced tableside and a South Tyrolean cheese raclette is melted whole rather than served in the usual small bowls. Rooms come in six styles, from Style Rooms with a fixed mountain view to the separate MONTI House cabins 300 metres into the forest, designed by Merano's Harry Thaler for guests who want distance without leaving the property. Winter brings a private skiing area, ski transfer and passes arranged directly through the hotel, alongside a fitness center, massage room, steam bath and library for anyone who prefers to stay put. A playroom and picnic area make it workable for families, though the tone, quiet, design-led, built around a spa that opens at 7:30am and closes at 8pm, suits couples and solo travellers more naturally than large groups. Staff move between English, Italian, German and French, and a tour desk handles onward plans for those heading into Merano or the wider Dolomites. Pets are welcome for a fee, and a cleaning tax is settled at the hotel rather than folded into the room rate. It is not a hotel that explains itself loudly. Guests either find it, or they don't.
