THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Corte della Maesta Antiche Residenze
In La Badessa, the wrought-iron canopy bed came from an antique dealer in Bologna, once slept in by an abbess, now angled toward a window that looks out over the calanchi badlands toward Lubriano. That is the kind of object you find at Corte della Maestà, a four-suite house set in the medieval tower of Civita di Bagnoregio, the town reached only on foot across a footbridge and known locally as the dying town for the way its cliffs keep eroding beneath it. There are just two floors and four rooms here, each named and furnished after a story: La Sonnambula for Bellini's opera, its theatrical backdrop hung above a queen bed inside the old tower; La Scrittrice, papered in the Art Nouveau florals that once lined Virginia Woolf's writing room; La Badessa, with its freestanding cast-iron bathtub and French walnut fireplace. Rooms come with mini bar, safe, private bathroom and continental breakfast, plus access to a small cinema room, library and piano shared among guests. Wine and soft drinks are included, not an upsell. This suits someone who wants a handful of nights inside a real building with a real history, not a hotel that happens to be old. It does not suit anyone chasing a pool, a gym or room service at 2am; there is no lobby to speak of, and the nearest parking is a paid walk away. Airport transfer can be arranged for a fixed fee, and a separate cleaning tax is settled at the property. What no comparable stay nearby offers is this: four rooms, each a finished piece of theatre, inside a village that empties out after the day-trippers leave. A four-suite house built into Civita di Bagnoregio's medieval tower, where each room is furnished as its own story, from Bellini's opera to an abbess's antique canopy bed. Suits travellers after a real building with real history, not amenities; wine and continental breakfast are included, a pool is not.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Rooms at Corte della Maestà look out over the calanchi, the dramatically eroded clay badlands surrounding Civita di Bagnoregio, with sightlines toward the hilltop town of Lubriano. The suites' balconies and windows frame this rugged landscape, part of the timeless, secluded setting the property describes as shielded from haste and urgency.
