THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Castello di Reschio
The castle at Reschio dates to 1050, a thousand-year-old fortress in the Umbrian hills above Lisciano Niccone, and its 36 rooms sit inside walls that have been continuously restored rather than converted overnight. The estate around it runs to 3,700 acres of woodland and meadow, centred on the castle itself and a collection of more than fifty farmhouses, many of which the same family has spent three decades bringing back from ruin. What sets this place apart from other converted-castle hotels is that the furniture, chandeliers, and marble-topped bars inside are made on site by the owners own design studio, run by architect Benedikt Bolza, whose work has been recognised among Architectural Digests hundred best architects working today. Guests eat at either Ristorante al Castello, set within the castle walls with a sunset terrace, or Ristorante alle Scuderie in the centre of the estate, and drink at one of three bars, including the one by the pool. The pool itself sits among pine trees and private gardens with views over the hills at dusk. There is a sauna, a massage room, and a spa center for a slower day, plus an outdoor pool as an alternative to the main one. Because the building is centuries old and set on a hillside, guests with mobility concerns should expect some inclines, though the hotel has accessible public areas and rooms reachable by elevator. Pets are welcome, which is unusual at a property this considered. Anyone wanting a resort with predictable comforts should look elsewhere; anyone who wants to feel the weight of a real castle, run by the family that rebuilt it, will find little to fault here. A thousand-year-old castle in the Umbrian hills, restored by the family that owns it, its furniture made in their own design studio. Two restaurants, three bars, and a pine-shaded pool fill the days across a 3,700-acre estate. Pets are welcome; steep hillside inclines are not for everyone.

Given the hotel's centuries-old foundations and hillside perch, those who are less mobile may need a little assistance up and down inclines. There are plenty of accessible public areas, though, and numerous specially-adapted rooms with either ground-floor or elevator access.
That covetable furniture you'll find yourself fondly stroking during your stay all comes courtesy of the on-site design studio helmed by architect-owner, Count Benedikt, hailed as one of the 100 best working today by Architectural Digest, no less.

Your taste already has an address

For more than three decades, architect Benedikt Bolza's in-house studio has restored over thirty of the estate's farmhouses, favouring reclaimed materials and traditional techniques alongside discreet modern systems. The same team that designs also maintains each building, working closely with local blacksmiths, carpenters and stonemasons on custom pieces.
The estate offers two restaurants and three bars, including one by the hotel pool.
Ristorante al Castello sits within the castle walls with a terrace overlooking the sunset.
The castle's swimming pool is set among pine trees and private gardens with sunset views.
Guests can arrange Bathhouse rituals, yoga sessions and horse riding across the estate.
