THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Sant'Angelo Luxury Resort
Wake in a room cut into calcarenite rock, step through the patio door, and the day's first steps are along a stone alley in the Sassi di Matera rather than a corridor. Sant'Angelo Luxury Resort is not one building but 33 rooms scattered through historic cave dwellings across the old quarter, a genuine albergo diffuso arrangement that few luxury properties in Italy can claim. Rooms range from compact Standard doubles to larger Superior patios, each fitted with air conditioning, minibar, safe and a private bathroom, and several open onto natural terraces facing Piazza San Pietro Caveoso and the Murgia park beyond. A member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the property runs a bar, restaurant, cafe and massage room, and staff speak English, Spanish and Italian at the 24-hour desk. Guests can book a cooking class built around Lucanian dishes, a guided walk through the Sassi, a trek to the rock churches, or a ride through the old town by Ape Calessino or electric Vespa. What it does not offer is convenience of arrival: the hotel sits inside a restricted traffic zone, cars must be left at the contracted Sant'Isidoro Parking nearby, and there is no single lobby, since the rooms are spread across separate historic dwellings connected by staircases and courtyards. That trade-off suits someone who wants to feel Matera rather than watch it from a window, and will frustrate anyone who wants to unload bags at the door. This is a stay built around the walk itself, not around the room you end up in. Sant'Angelo Luxury Resort spreads 33 rooms across genuine cave dwellings in Matera's Sassi, patios opening onto stone alleys rather than corridors. Expect cooking classes and treks to the rock churches, but leave the car at Sant'Isidoro Parking; this is a walking stay, not a drive-up one.
