THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Il Bottaccio
Inside an 18th-century olive mill in Montignoso, the Royal Suite still keeps its old millstones and a two-meter sunken bathtub carved from one of the original olive vats, set beneath a fireplace and four-poster bed dressed in Vietri ceramics. Il Bottaccio holds only eight rooms, each one different from the next: the Luxury Suite 'Mandy' has Carrara marble basins carved by Swiss artist Mandy Volz opening onto its own garden, the Presidential Suite rises to a cathedral ceiling locals call the little church, and the Prestige Suite's Trifore room is lit through stone-cut windows under a painted wood ceiling. That kind of room-by-room craftsmanship, built with international artists rather than a single design brief, is not something a hotel this size usually attempts, and it is what separates the property from other Tuscan retreats near Forte dei Marmi. The restaurant runs on the season, drawing produce from local growers rather than a fixed menu, and the grounds stretch to a private beach, a seasonal indoor pool, mini golf, a diving club and trails for hiking or cycling. Staff speak English, French and Italian, and a Relais & Châteaux badge signals the kind of service that notices details without announcing them. This suits travellers who want a house with a history rather than a lobby, who would rather spend an evening reading in the library than queuing for a spa slot, and who don't mind paying for scarcity. It will frustrate anyone chasing resort scale, on-site nightlife or a large pool deck. It's selling the sense of staying somewhere that was a working mill long before it was a hotel, and still feels like it. Il Bottaccio is an eight-room mill house near Forte dei Marmi, Tuscany, where every suite carries its own history, from carved olive-vat bathtubs to Carrara marble sculpted by a Swiss artist. It rewards travellers who want scarcity and craft over amenities, and offers little for anyone after resort scale.
