THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Castello del Nero Hotel & Spa
Castello del Nero occupies a 12th-century castle in the hills above Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, thirty minutes from Florence and Siena and close enough to San Gimignano for an afternoon detour without committing the day. The 740-acre estate is planted with vineyards, and the cellar holds more than 1,100 wine labels, two of them produced on site alongside the property's own olive oil, a detail that separates this from other Chianti hotels with a pool and a spa but no vines of their own. Guests eat at the Michelin-starred La Torre or the relaxed La Taverna, and in summer meals move to the terrace or poolside. COMO Shambhala Retreat runs the wellness side: sauna, steam room, an ice fountain, and a heated vitality pool, plus a separate 25-metre outdoor pool for laps rather than lounging. There are two tennis courts, a gym, hiking paths across the estate, and a VITA Parcours for anyone who wants to move rather than sit. Fifty rooms across two floors means the castle never feels crowded, though families travelling with several children should note the deposit of 300 EUR per day and that a cleaning tax is billed separately at the property. Couples marrying here can use the on-site chapel. This suits travellers who want Tuscany without driving everywhere, who'd rather taste an estate's own wine than read about it on a card, and who don't mind that a property this old runs on two floors instead of a tower of them. It does not suit anyone chasing a beach, a city view, or a fast check-in, since arrival isn't permitted before 15:00, and rooms hold onto the quiet a castle earns over eight centuries. A 12th-century castle in Chianti with fifty rooms, two Tuscan restaurants (one Michelin-starred), and a cellar of 1,100 wine labels, two grown on its own 740-acre estate. Suits travellers who want the countryside without renting a car. Skip it if you need a fast check-in or a beach.

Villa San Luigi is a refurbished eighteenth-century farmhouse at the heart of the estate, a short drive from the main hotel. Interiors are curated by designer Paola Navone, blending Italian character with contemporary style. The five-bedroom villa has its own check-in, wellness annexe and infinity pool, with curated experiences such as wine tasting and pizza making included in each stay.
