THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Fufu Hakone
At Fufu Hakone, near Gora in the Hakone mountains, every one of the 39 rooms, not just the top suites, opens onto its own hot spring bath, set behind a window you can slide open to the mountain air. Downstairs, the large communal bath runs milky and mineral under the same ridgeline, while the room baths run clear. The rooms sit across three low buildings rather than one tower, giving the resort a scattered feel rather than a hotel block. Dinner is a fixed Japanese course, tempura, sushi, wagyu, or teppanyaki cooked at the counter in front of you, served in private rooms or counter seats rather than an open dining room, so anyone wanting to pick from a menu should look elsewhere. Breakfast runs a tight window, eight to ten, and costs extra. The spa, called Hinoka, uses a fermented hinoki-wood powder bath ahead of the massage, an old fermentation method; it keeps its own rules too, no guests under sixteen, pregnant guests offered facials only. A shuttle runs to Gora Station, since the hotel sits a five-minute drive from the Hakone Open Air Museum and Hakone Kowakien Yunessun, far from Lake Ashi and the Gotemba Premium Outlets. Free parking, Wi-Fi, a bar and a conference hall round things out, though pets are not allowed and smoking stays in designated areas. This suits a couple or a solo traveller happy to spend a day doing little beyond soaking and eating well, not a group after a big nightlife scene or a family wanting a self-serve breakfast buffet. What lingers after is small and specific: your own hot spring, behind the door, with nobody's schedule attached to it. Every one of Fufu Hakone's 39 rooms has its own private hot spring bath overlooking the Hakone mountains, plus a separate milky communal bath, a fixed-course Japanese restaurant and a fermentation-based spa. It suits slow soaking over sightseeing, not families wanting a buffet or a lively bar scene.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Dining at Fufu Hakone centers on two kitchens: Yama no Emi for Japanese cuisine built around foraged mountain vegetables, fresh sushi and rich meat dishes, and Ishizue for live teppanyaki. Counter seating and private rooms let guests choose their level of privacy while chefs tailor each course to individual preference.
A complimentary shuttle runs to and from Hakone Tozan Railway Gora Station.
Check-in is from 3:00 PM and check-out is by 11:00 AM.
